Former MVP quarterback rules out NFL comeback amid Jets buzz

Through three weeks of play, it's become evident the New York Jets could use some reinforcement under center. Whether Gang Green ultimately dips their toes in the quarterback market remains unknown. Regardless, former league MVP Matt Ryan is ruling himself out as a potential option.

The four-time Pro Bowler joined CBS Sports HQ on Monday, where he dismissed the idea of making a comeback bid with the Jets.

Ryan's name was buzzing on Sunday when Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported that Ryan and fellow free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz each reached out to the Jets to offer their services in the wake of Aaron Rodgers' injury. Ryan confirmed his agent, Todd France, did contact the Jets but reaffirmed he has "no interest" in stepping away from his broadcasting gig with CBS Sports.

For better or worse, the Jets appear content with moving forward with Zach Wilson as their quarterback. Following New York's 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that Wilson "gives us the best chance to win."

The former No. 2 overall pick has failed to eclipse 170 yards passing in any game this season, tossing four interceptions to just two touchdowns. New York's passing offense ranks last in the NFL, averaging 133.7 yards per game. The four teams averaging sub-150 yards passing per game have combined for two total wins this season.

After an offseason riddled with Super Bowl aspirations, the Jets season fizzled out before it ever had an opportunity to take off. Without Rodgers in the lineup, New York could remain in the cellar of the AFC East. While veteran signal-callers such as Ryan or Wentz might give the Jets a slightly better opportunity to be competitive, there's no unemployed quarterback out there who could step in and have the Jets challenging the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins in their division.
