For the majority of fans, players, and coaches around the league, Mike Tomlin is viewed as the cream of the crop.
Pittsburgh has undoubtedly underperformed as of late given the expectations of the franchise, but few believe the Steelers would be better off without Mike Tomlin.
Former NFL scout and Three & Out Host John Middlekauff is one of the few:
Steelers Should Have Moved On
“I thought they should’ve moved on from Tomlin last year,” Middlekauff said. “Like I said, it’s time for a new start… I think the Steelers are in a little bit of trouble. They’re not going to be terrible, but I kinda view them in the same range they’ve been in.”
In fairness to Middlekauff, there isn't some half-baked hot take. He has been pushing this narrative since midway through last season, citing the Steelers recent mediocrity as a reason to cut ties with Coach Tomlin.
He also doesn't believe that Tomlin can't coach, but he thinks it's time for both sides to start fresh, similar to what Andy Reid did with the Eagles.
Widely thought as one of the best coaches in the league while in Philly, Reid just couldn't get over the hump and moved on to Kansas City, where he has since won three Super Bowls.
Unlike Reid however, Tomlin has a Super Bowl ring at his first HC destination and has still yet to have a losing season.
That being said, Mike Tomlin is approaching the final year of his contract, and despite the sentiments of the front office, has yet to sign an extension.
So if things don't go to plan in Pittsburgh this fall, Middlekauff's wish could come true.
