Former Redskins RB Clinton Portis jokes about comeback

After the Washington Redskins managed to gain a measly 14 yards on the ground Sunday in their 44-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers, former Redskins running back Clinton Portis was left with the impression he could help out in the Washington backfield.

"I haven’t been so close to thinking about coming out of retirement until [Sunday]," 34-year-old Clinton Portis said Monday on ESPN 980’s "The Drive With Cooley and Czabe." "I really think I could go out there and get seven carries for zero yards. Matter of fact, I’m going to get you a first down out of those seven carries."

The Redskins' two primary running backs, Alfred Morris and Matt Jones, rushed for a combined zero yards on seven carries. Although it's hard to get worse than zero rushing yards from your running backs, Portis did take the play-calling into account in his analysis of the Redskins' woes.

"It was obvious," Portis said. "You run on first down, then you throw second and third, then you punt, then you come back and do the same thing. Again, it goes to play-calling for me. I think Sean McVay is a decent offensive coordinator. I know he’s young and he’s growing, but again, you have to mix it up."

Portis also said that he would utilize more two tight end sets and put fullback Darrel Young in the backfield more in order to help Washington's run game.

Assuming Portis was truly joking about his comeback, the former Redskins and Broncos running back finished his nine-year career with a total of 9,923 rushing yards.
