The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially announced the hiring of Nick Holz to serve as their passing game coordinator. Nick Holz served as the UNLV Rebels’ co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the 2022–2023 season. Holz’s UNLV passing attack averaged 215 passing yards per game and tallied 15 passing touchdowns to seven interceptions. Jim Bob Cooter is leaving the Jacksonville Jaguars to become the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, so Holz is taking his place.

Holz has connections to the Las Vegas Raiders as well. Nick Holz worked for the Raiders from 2012 to 2021 before his time with UNLV. During his time with the Raiders, Holz had a variety of roles within the Raiders offensive staff. He coached Andrew Luck while under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, a successful stretch of his coaching career. Under Holz, Luck finished with one All-American selection and two Heisman runner-up finishes. This is probably what compelled Doug Pederson, the coach of the Jaguars, to offer Holz the position, due to the fact that Trevor Lawrence, a budding NFL star, is in charge of his offense.

Lawrence just completed a brilliant second season in which he helped the Jaguars reach the playoffs for the first time since 2017. During the 2022-23 campaign, Lawrence finished with 4,113 passing yards, 30 total touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. The Jaguars finished the 2022–23 NFL season with the 10th-most pass yards per game. Holz has the opportunity to work closely with Lawrence, a Super Bowl-winning coach in Pederson, and the Jaguars’ offensive tools in his new role as passing game coordinator. Lawrence took a step in the right direction in 2022, but needs to make another jump to reach true stardom. We’ll see if Holz can help him become one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL.
