Future HOF OT plans to retain title as NFL's oldest player

Free-agent offensive lineman Jason Peters is planning to play this season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

When Tom Brady announced his second retirement on Feb. 1, the 41-year-old Peters became the NFL's oldest active player. At the time of TB12's decision, it was reported by Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Peters' 2023 squad (the Dallas Cowboys) expected him to be back for the 2023 campaign.

The two-time First-Team All-Pro wasn't re-signed by the Cowboys following the 2022 season in which he played 11 games and made two starts (including one of each in the playoffs). Peters joined Dallas' practice squad in early September 2022 after one season with the Chicago Bears and was on the field for just 235 regular-season snaps last year but wasn't called for any penalties.

The University of Arkansas product is one of only three active players over 40, joining free-agent punter Andy Lee and free-agent kicker Robbie Gould. Lee is a three-time Pro Bowler and turned 41 last week, while Gould has made one Pro Bowl and will be 41 in December.

Despite loads of miles on his legs and Father Time working against him, Peters does have a few things going in his favor during his effort to find his next employer.

The former Razorback showed his versatility last season with the Cowboys, moving to right tackle after spending well over a decade primarily as a left tackle.

Peters also has plenty of wisdom to share from his two decades in the league, ranking sixth among active players in games played (238) and fifth in games started (219). More importantly, he's played in seven playoff contests and won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, although he was not active for that game due to injury.

With injuries being an unfortunate, constant downside to football, Peters could find himself back on an NFL roster by Week 1.
