Giants HC Brian Daboll: 'There’s a lot of things to like about' QB Daniel Jones

The future of New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is very much up in the air this winter, and not just because he's recovering from a neck injury that has him avoiding football-related contact until August preseason games. Neither new general manager Joe Schoen nor new head coach Brian Daboll has any direct ties to Jones, and the Giants haven't yet publicly made a call regarding the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Schoen vowed last week the Giants will "build an offense around Daniel to accentuate what he does best," and Daboll also spoke highly of the signal-caller during his Monday introductory press event.

"He’s got the right mindset, he’s got good size, there’s a lot of things to like about Daniel," Daboll said of Jones, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "We’ll just take it one day at a time. We’ll work with him, help him get better. . . . It takes a lot to raise a quarterback. He’s been around the block through these last three years with some different pieces. We’re going to try to give him some stability and just take it from there."

It's widely believed Schoen and company chose Daboll as head coach because of his work as Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator in helping quarterback Josh Allen develop into a top-tier player at the position. However, it's worth noting Schoen reportedly told insider Peter King "he’ll have to clear out $40 million from a bloated and mismanaged salary cap this spring" before he starts looking to improve a Giants roster that went 4-13 this past campaign.

Despite recent comments, logic suggests Schoen will decline Jones' fifth-year option and, instead, see if the 24-year-old can play himself into an extension or a franchise-tag situation as part of a team that will seemingly be sellers ahead of next fall's trade deadline.
