New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who drew two interviews for the head coaching vacancy with the Seattle Seahawks, apparently made enough of an impression on the club despite not getting the top job.

The Seahawks, who hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald for their head coaching spot, sought and were denied permission from the Giants to speak with Kafka about their offensive coordinator role, CBS Spots insider Jonathan Jones reported.

The Giants, who will have new coordinators on special teams (Michael Ghobrial) and defense (still to be determined), apparently didn't want to lose Kafka to a lateral move.

Although the team blocked a potential lateral move by Kafka, who still has another year on his contract, that doesn't mean that the Giants primary play-caller of the last two seasons will retain that role in 2024 because head coach Brian Daboll told reporters at the end of the season that there would be discussions as to how the play calling would be handled.

Kafka has now drawn interest in two head coaching cycles but has been passed over for other candidates. He recently served as one of the two head coaches in the Shrine Bowl, a valuable experience that should serve him well if he does land a head coaching job.

Had Kafka been hired for an NFL head coaching job, quarterback Shea Tierney was largely considered the favorite for a promotion, though again, who ends up calling plays for the Giants in 2024 remains to be seen.
