The magical run of Tommy DeVito as New York Giants starting quarterback has reached its conclusion, as the team is going with Tyrod Taylor under center for the remainder of the season. But DeVito took a valuable lesson from his experience in the spotlight.
“That I belong,” DeVito told assembled media members when asked what he has learned over the last couple of months, per Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper. “In the NFL, specifically.
“I mean, just to go out and to prove that to myself. To the younger me, to the me that was training to be here to this point. That’s all it is.”
DeVito was not supposed to have any role with the 2023 Giants. But he seized the opportunity when it was presented to him. Now, the question is whether he can carve out a future in the NFL.
DeVito provided what Giants needed
An undrafted rookie out of Illinois, DeVito was originally pressed into action in Week 8 against the New York Jets, after Taylor left that game injured. But coach Brian Daboll showed no faith in DeVito, who was limited mostly to handing the ball off.
Week 9 brought another injury, this time to Daniel Jones. DeVito again came on in relief, this time with a little more leash.
Tommy Cutlets, as he is affectionately known, then took New York/New Jersey by storm. Taking over as the starting quarterback in Week 10, DeVito led the Giants to three wins in his first four tries. To that point of the season, New York had two victories in nine games.
But DeVito struggled in recent losses to the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles, culminating in his benching in favor of Taylor in Week 16.
DeVito’s future in the NFL is unknown. His stretch of competent play in 2023 should mean he is on a roster next season. As long as he keeps backing himself, DeVito’s shown himself up to the task.
