GM Brian Gutekunst: Packers haven't discussed signing Clay Matthews

Despite recent suggestions from Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers don't appear to be interested in signing Clay Matthews.

Speaking with reporters Sunday, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said Green Bay has "had no discussions" about signing the veteran linebacker.

Randall Cobb and David Bakhtiari also lobbied for the Packers to bring back Matthews, who spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the franchise.

While it seems like Gutekunst won't bring back Matthews, he has shown a willingness to listen to Rodgers' suggestions about players he would like to play with.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Packers' decision to bring back Cobb in a trade with the Houston Texans was a "specific request" from Rodgers.

So, while a deal seems out of the picture right now, it might not be down the road.

Matthews left the Packers to sign with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. However, he told NFL.com's Michael Silver that he wanted to stay in Green Bay, but the Packers said there was "no room" for him at the time.

Matthews played well for the Rams, recording eight sacks in 13 appearances, but he was released by the team in March 2020 and has been a free agent ever since.
