GM Joe Schoen: Giants 'really like' QB Daniel Jones despite declining fifth-year option

The New York Giants had a newsworthy Thursday even before they used two first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, as they declined the fifth-year option attached to the contract for quarterback Daniel Jones. New York then earned widespread praise after the club selected Oregon pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux with pick No. 5 and Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal seventh overall. 

Despite those presumed wins, some couldn't help but ask about Jones' status with the Giants later on Thursday night. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported that afternoon that team ownership, general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll still believed the 2019 first-round draft choice could evolve into "their long-term answer at quarterback," and Schoen seemed to confirm that when speaking with reporters during the evening hours. 

"We are always open to all positions, but that doesn’t really affect our draft status," Schoen said of how declining Jones' option may or may not influence his plans for the rest of the player-selection process, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "We met on it today, and it really doesn’t affect what we think about Daniel. We really like Daniel and the work he’s been putting in. And we are excited where he is, and we are excited to work with him. It was a decision we thought was best for the New York Giants at this time."

Schoen added Jones remains atop the depth chart ahead of journeyman veteran Tyrod Taylor, who signed with the Giants last month. 

As for Jones, he'll be tasked with fighting for his job beyond the 2022 season as soon as he's cleared for contact. A neck injury cost him the final six games of the 2021 campaign.
