GM Joe Schoen: Giants will 'take our time' deciding on Daniel Jones' fifth-year option

New general manager Joe Schoen and new head coach Brian Daboll joined the New York Giants in January from the Buffalo Bills, and neither had any prior ties to Big Blue quarterback Daniel Jones. Both still spoke highly of the 2019 first-round draft pick during introductory press events.

Jones is recovering from a neck injury that sidelined him through all of December and early January but is on track to be cleared for contact in August. The 24-year-old has not yet, however, proven he can be the franchise's long-term answer at the sport's most important position, and many have assumed Schoen and company will decline the fifth-year option attached to Jones' rookie contract by or in May.

As Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio explained, Schoen neither confirmed nor denied that during a Wednesday appearance on "PFT Live."

"We haven’t been around him other than a couple weeks," Schoen said of Jones. "The advantage that we have is that with Daboll being a new head coach, the players will be in the building on April 4th. We’ll get to have a chance to have a minicamp the week before the draft. Again, we’re going to take our time with the process. We’re going to be around Daniel. We’re going to get the chance to see him throw and work with the guys that we have. We don’t have to have a decision until May 2nd. We’re going to be patient with that decision."

As Schoen did in late January, he once again praised Jones' arm strength and athleticism.

Recently, the Giants have been linked with Bills backup quarterback and 2017 first-round draft pick Mitchell Trubisky due to his working relationships with Schoen and Daboll. On Tuesday, Bills coach Sean McDermott essentially confirmed Trubisky won't return as Buffalo's QB2 for another season because the 27-year-old wants to compete for a starting job later this year.
