Gregg Williams fired after costing Jets first win of season

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams cost the New York Jets their first win of the season on Sunday. One day later, it cost him his job.

The Jets fired Williams on Monday after a heartbreaking 31-28 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The decision comes after Williams called an all-out blitz while New York was leading the Raiders 28-24 with seconds remaining on the clock. The play call resulted in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Henry Ruggs III, who ended up one-on-one with undrafted rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson.

Sunday's loss dropped the Jets to 0-12, putting the team on pace to finish without a win for the first time in franchise history. New York's worst finish came in 1996, when it went 1-15 with Rich Kotite at the helm.

Fans and football pundits called for New York to fire Williams following the loss. Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan even called Williams' play call one of the "dumbest" he had ever seen ... and the current ESPN analyst called some pretty senseless plays while coaching New York from 2009-14, but none were that hideous.

Williams had been the Jets defensive coordinator since last season when he was hired by the team alongside Adam Gase, who could end up being fired next. Assistant defensive coordinator Frank Bush will take over the interim role with Williams gone.
