Hall of Fame QB weighs in on Sean Payton's attempt to revive Russell Wilson

Although Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton revived Drew Brees' career in New Orleans, a Hall of Fame quarterback believes he shouldn't use the same blueprint to salvage quarterback Russell Wilson.

"No, that's not fair," Peyton Manning —who played for Denver from 2012 to 2015 — said of Brees and Wilson comparisons Thursday on "The Pat McAfee Show." "Russell Wilson is Russell Wilson. He has his own unique style, just as Drew Brees did."

The former QB has a point. Brees was a classic pocket passer with the second-highest completion percentage (67.7) in league history, per Pro Football Reference. Wilson relies on his mobility to extend plays and his arm strength to attack defenses downfield.

Even though Brees made 12 Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl in 15 seasons under Payton, the former Saints HC must cater his system for Wilson. Manning indicated he can adapt since he's one of the sharpest offensive minds in the NFL.

"He knows how to coach different types of QBs," Manning said. "Russell's gonna be more comfortable doing some of the things he used to do in Seattle. You know Sean Payton's going to put his players in the best position."

In 15 games last season, Wilson veered from his strengths and posted career lows in passing TDs (16), completion percentage (60.5) and passer rating (84.4). The Broncos went 5-12, their third consecutive season with 10 or more losses.

Perhaps Payton should heed Manning's advice and tweak his system to highlight Wilson's skills. If he recaptures his Pro Bowl form, the Broncos may sneak into the playoff hunt and post their first winning season in six years.
