Hall of Famer: Jets should let Colin Kaepernick compete with Zach Wilson

New England Patriots legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ty Law has an idea for who the New York Jets could sign to serve as competition for struggling quarterback Zach Wilson.

According to Adam London of NESN, Law suggested during a Tuesday appearance on Boston sports radio station WEEI that the Jets have nothing to lose and should reach out to free-agent signal-caller Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, of course, hasn't played since the 2016 NFL season when he knelt during renditions of the national anthem to protest acts of police violence and racial inequality. The veteran who turns 36 years old in November revealed in June he is "going to keep pushing" to receive an opportunity from an NFL team, but it was reported earlier this month the Jets weren't interested in his services.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, unproven 28-year-old Tim Boyle served as Wilson's primary backup. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported around that same time that the Jets were adding journeyman Trevor Siemian to their quarterback room.

Law hinted the Jets need to inject some energy into their locker room after four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles just four snaps into his Gang Green regular-season debut. Rodgers' presence was a major reason the Jets were selected to be this summer's team for the HBO "Hard Knocks" program.

"They just need to go ahead and make a splash," Law said about the Jets. "You got Aaron Rodgers, all this hype. 'Hard Knocks,' you’re doing all of that good stuff. Might as well keep it going, man. Bring back Kaepernick."

Hall of Famer Joe Namath and fellow former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason are among noteworthy members of the NFL community who have publicly said at least some of Wilson's teammates likely believe the team can't win with the 24-year-old in the lineup. While it seems the Jets won't be trading for an accomplished starter such as Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings anytime soon, there's no sign any team views Kaepernick as a legitimate option this fall.
