Wide receiver Davion Davis was a Cleveland Browns fan favorite for much of this preseason.
With big catches in practice and in games, he was a popular pick to squeeze onto the 53-man roster.
His outgoing personality played well among his teammates.
As did his 12 catches for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns in the preseason.
But Davis will ply his wares for the Houston Texans in the weeks ahead.
Cleveland lost the young receiver off their practice squad as the Texans place him directly on their active roster.
Davis is more likely to see real playing time with the Texans than he was with the Browns.
And he provides a developmental player to grow with the rebuilding Houston team.
Why Didn’t Davis Make the Browns Squad?
Davis was mostly a casualty of numbers in the wide receiver room despite his impressive preseason.
Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry were cemented in at the string wideout positions.
Donovan Peoples-Jones, rookie Anthony Schwartz, and the popular Rashard Higgins backed them up.
When Demetric Felton shone as a returner and pass catcher, Davis’ odds diminished further.
Cleveland cut Khadarel Hodge, another fan favorite, who landed with Detroit.
That might have created a false sense Davis would make the team.
But the NFL threw a wrench into things with a player suspension.
Davis’ 2-year-old driving charges, recently settled by his lawyers, led to a 4-game suspension to start 2021.
What It Means To the Browns
Cleveland let Davis serve his suspension as a Browns player to start the season.
But that doesn’t mean they intended for him to make the actual roster.
When the suspension was over, the team cut him and exposed him to waivers.
Only after he cleared that process was he signed to the practice squad.
But he probably sat behind JoJo Natson and Ja’Marcus Bradley in the call-up order.
Davis has a chance to see action quickly for Houston as Danny Amendola and Nico Collins deal with injuries.
The former Seahawk and Brown slides in as the Texans’ 5th or 6th receiver, depending on Amendola’s availability.
And his status as a former Sam Houston State University star won’t hurt his popularity in the Lone Star State.
