How long is NFL halftime?

During the four 15-minute quarters of an NFL game, players are involved in scores of high-impact plays. Although NFL players are highly conditioned athletes, they sometimes need a break. Within the game, players get short breaks between plays, when penalties are called, and during timeouts and TV commercials. The longest break during an NFL game is the 12-minute halftime that takes place between the second and third quarters.

What happens during NFL halftime?

NFL halftime is a welcome respite for players and coaches in their locker rooms. Banged-up players receive medical attention. Others seek equipment repair or replacement. Most players drink fluids to stay hydrated. Coaches often adjust game plans with players during halftime.

While players are in the locker room, fans may be entertained by a band or other performers. Some fans simply stretch their legs while others visit the restrooms or concession stands within the stadium. As halftime comes to a close, fans scramble to their seats for the beginning of the second half.

How long is NFL halftime compared to other sports?

  • National Basketball Association (NBA) — 15 minutes.
  • College Football (NCAA) — 20 minutes. At halftime, the home team's marching band may entertain the crowd.
  • Soccer — 15 minutes.
  • Hockey — None. A National Hockey League (NHL) game consists of three 20-minute periods. The first and second periods are followed by a 17-minute intermission.

In 1990, the NFL changed the length of halftime from 15 minutes to the current 12 minutes. At the Super Bowl, halftime is approximately 30 minutes. The NFL brings in a big-name musical performer or puts on a special show, taking advantage of the huge television audience for the league's annual championship game.
