The first wave of free agency has ended, and it was a memorable one for Falcons fans. They finally got out of quarterback purgatory by signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal, and they bolstered the receiver room by adding a trio of pass catchers.

Altogether, Arthur Blank has handed out well over $200 million worth of contracts, and the Falcons have used up most of their cap space they had available coming into the offseason. Per Over The Cap, Atlanta only has about $4 million in cap space remaining following the first week of free agency.

$4 million doesn’t leave the Falcons with a lot of wiggle room to make more moves, especially since they still have to sign their rookie class and probably want to leave a little in the reserve for in-season acquisitions.

However, the Falcons have yet to take any cost-cutting measures this offseason. There are several players that could be cut to save some cash, and they’ve yet to restructure a single contract. If they wanted to, the Falcons could open up a treasure chest of funds to make any acquisition they desired.

The team is in a much better position today than they were at season’s end, but Terry Fontenot isn’t done just yet. The defensive side of the ball has yet to be addressed, and I don’t imagine the Falcons are eager to go into the draft with holes at EDGE, cornerback, and safety.
