How undrafted Steeler saved coach from getting severely injured

Following the final play of the Steelers' 23-19 win over the Packers in Week 10, a large scrum began to take form on Pittsburgh's sideline after a late hit on safety Damontae Kazee, who knocked down special teams coordinator Danny Smith.

It quickly turned into a scary scene, but with one of the best heads-up plays of the day, undrafted TE Rodney Williams pulled 70-year-old Smith out from underneath the heated players.

It was quite the heroic effort by Williams as more and more players got involved as Smith was getting lost under the pile. However, the second-year tight end doesn't believe Smith was all that affected by the incident.

"He didn't say much to me," Williams said after the game. "He got up and was still chewing his gum. Even when he went down, he was still chewing his gum."

For those who are unaware, Smith is an avid gum chewer and is always seen chewing a large piece of gum, whether at practice or during a game. It's certainly the perfect comedic relief needed in what could have been a scary situation.

Head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the status of Smith following the game but he was completely unaware of what transpired.

"I don't know what you're referring to regarding Danny," Tomlin told reporters. "I assume he's fine. I don't know that I've made eye contact with him but I hadn't heard wind of anything of any significance such as that."

Tomlin will surely give Williams some words of affirmation once he is filled in. Maybe the Steelers will even reward him with some extended playing time in Week 11 as he has yet to record his first catch of the season.
