If Raiders don't want Derek Carr, they should look to trade instead of releasing him

A Derek Carr and Raiders (5-8) breakup is "inevitable," Vincent Bonsignore of The Las Vegas-Review Journal reported. Rather than releasing him, though, Las Vegas should find a trade partner.

Carr, 31, produced during his first nine seasons in Las Vegas. Per Pro Football Reference, he's ninth in passing touchdowns among active quarterbacks (213).

Although the downturn of the Russell Wilson and Matthew Stafford deals might scare teams away, Washington, New Orleans and Indianapolis are interested in improving at quarterback, per Bonsignore.

Also, teams with high draft picks might want Carr instead of taking a risk on a rookie quarterback.

"One team identified by another league source as a team to watch for is the Houston Texans," wrote Pro Football Focus' Doug Kyed.

Per Tankathon's Mock Draft, Houston has two first-round picks (No.1 and No. 12). Perhaps the Raiders and Texans can make a deal. Per Tankathon, Las Vegas has the eighth pick in this year's draft.

According to ESPN's Todd McShay, the 2023 NFL Draft includes three quarterbacks with first-round grades: Will Levis (Kentucky), C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) and Bryce Young (Alabama).

McShay believes each will be off the board after the first six picks, outside of Las Vegas' range.

Regardless, Las Vegas should try to get something. It's easier to rebuild a franchise with a foundation, not one starting from scratch.
