The Indianapolis Colts have signed running back Trey Sermon to their practice squad, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.

Sermon last played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, appearing in two games and carrying the ball twice for 19 yards.

The 24-year-old, who played three years at the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Ohio State for his senior season, was originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Sermon played in nine contests with two starts during his rookie campaign, totaling 167 yards and a touchdown off of 41 rushing attempts. He added three catches for 26 yards. An ankle injury cut his season short, and that ensuing offseason, the 49ers ultimately released Sermon.

Sermon was claimed off waivers by the Eagles just before the 2022 season began. He was waived by Philadelphia last week.

The Colts are in need of help in their running game given their current issues with star halfback Jonathan Taylor. Taylor is on the PUP list while he recovers from an ankle injury he suffered late last season, but it’s entirely possible he has played his last game in Indianapolis.

Taylor is entangled in a contract dispute with Indy’s front office and has asked for a trade. The Colts gave him permission to seek one, but nothing has come to fruition as of yet.

The 24-year-old is eligible to return from the PUP list in Week 5, but it remains to be seen if he will actually play another down for Indianapolis.

While Sermon will certainly not be able to replace the production that Taylor has given the Colts, he might at least represent a decent piece in a rushing attack that could certainly use some help in Taylor’s absence.

Indianapolis is 1-1 and will head on the road to battle the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
