Injured Broncos QB Russell Wilson will play Monday against Chargers, but is that smart?

Although Russell Wilson is dealing with a bothersome right shoulder injury, Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed the QB will play Monday against the Chargers.

"Russell is a tough human and not going to miss anything," Hackett said in a Tuesday news conference.

Although toughness is admirable, downplaying a serious injury is ill advised.

According to NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, Wilson strained his latissimus dorsi against the Raiders. On Friday, he hopped on a plane to Los Angeles and received a special injection (for more on lat injuries click here).

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a similar injury during training camp last season. He didn't throw for a month.

Wilson is trying rush his recovery, healing in one week. Perhaps he feels the pressure after being grilled for the Broncos 12-9 loss against the Colts, which caused them to fall to 2-3.

Despite the underwhelming start, Wilson should not accelerate his recovery.

Pelissero and Rapoport reported receiving an injection for this particular injury is unusual, indicating it's somewhat serious and not a little bump or bruise.

Another cause for concern is the Broncos offensive line. It's in shambles.

Pro Bowl left tackle Garett Bolles broke his right leg against the Colts. He will miss the rest of the season.

Even with Bolles, the O-line's play has been subpar, allowing 16 sacks, seventh most in the NFL. Teams know they can exploit this and continue to attack the battered Wilson.
