Insider: Daniel Jones has '28 percent' chance of signing extension with Giants

The jury is still out, in the eyes of some, regarding the future of New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Neither first-year general manager Joe Schoen nor first-year head coach Brian Daboll had anything to do with the Giants drafting Jones sixth overall in 2019, so that duo merely wants to see if the 25-year-old can prove he's a franchise player in the last year of his rookie contract.

With the Giants at 3-1 despite some shaky play from multiple aspects of their offense, some have wondered if they could consider holding onto Jones for at least another season.

For a piece published Wednesday, ESPN's Jordan Raanan estimated that Jones has only a 28 percent chance of putting pen to paper on an extension with his current employer before the new NFL year opens in March 2023.

"Jones has actually played pretty well so far this season (five total TDs versus three turnovers) while working with an insufficient group of receivers and seeing a lot of pressure," Raanan noted. "But he'd likely have to be better than pretty good for the Giants to invest in him long term. Tyrod Taylor is already signed for next season to a reasonable contract ($5.5 million) to be a bridge quarterback, and the 2023 draft class has plenty of options for New York."

Per ESPN stats, Jones heads into Week 5 at 23rd among eligible quarterbacks with an 81.9 passer rating, 19th with a 46.1 total QBR, and 30th with 631 passing yards on the season. While he's also contributed 193 yards and two scores on 31 carries, the often-injured fourth-year pro is already dealing with a sprained ankle before the MLB playoffs begin.

A sports adage teaches that "availability" is the most important ability, and the Giants' new management may ultimately decide Jones is unavailable far too often to deserve money beyond what's attached to his current deal.
