Insider says there's a 'good chance' Steelers sign surprise free agent

After what was an already busy Tuesday in the NFL, it was announced that a surprise free agent is now expected to hit the open market when free agency begins next week.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are releasing starting linebacker Jerome Baker after the two sides discussed a restructured contract and couldn't reach an agreement.

Miami is reportedly leaving the door open if Baker wants to return to the team, but Steelers insider Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette would be surprised if Baker wasn't wearing black and gold in 2024.

"Would not be stunned if Steelers bring in Jerome Baker at ILB. Actually, I'd say there is a good chance," Kaboly posted on platform X.

Pittsburgh must add to its inside linebacker room after watching Cole Holcomb (knee) and Kwon Alexander (Achilles) suffer season-ending injuries last season. Holcomb's timeline to return is still unknown while Alexander will be a free agent.

The Steelers still have Elandon Roberts under contract in 2024, but who they are planning to pair him with remains up for debate.

That's why reuniting him with Baker, who he played with for three seasons (2020-22) in Miami, seems like a no-brainer since the two already have rapport playing together.

Plus, Baker is still only 27 and is coming off a season where he had 78 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, three passes defensed and one touchdown in 13 games.

Baker will likely have several teams interested in his services, but Pittsburgh would be smart to do its best to bring him to the Steel City.

If the Steelers are successful in doing so, they will have one less position to worry about in the 2024 NFL Draft as they continue building a roster they're hopeful ends their playoff win drought next season.
