Insider shares if Vikings' Kirk Cousins could replace Jets' Zach Wilson

It sounds like New York Jets fans can stop hoping that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins will replace the struggling Zach Wilson anytime soon.

As noted by Justin Terranova of the New York Post, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter explained during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" that there's currently "nothing to" any idea regarding the Jets attempting to land Cousins before the Oct. 31 trade deadline.

"At that point, they’re punting on their season," Schefter said about the Vikings possibly moving on from Cousins after their 0-3 start. "Who are they turning it over to — (journeyman veteran) Nick Mullens? What are you doing if you’re the Vikings? It would send a bad message if you send Kirk Cousins away at this point in time."

At first glance, the Jets acquiring Cousins from the Vikings makes sense for all involved. The 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, seemingly isn't close to signing an extension with Minnesota and would be an immediate upgrade over a version of Wilson who began Tuesday as, statistically speaking, the worst QB1 in all the NFL.

However, Cousins is widely popular among Vikings teammates and helped the team win the NFC North division title last season with a record of 13-4. Earlier this month, Minnesota All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson publicly said he "would love for Kirk to continue to be my quarterback" beyond the 2023 campaign.

"I would love to have Kirk and continue my journey with Kirk," Jefferson added at that time.

Aaron Rodgers going down with a torn Achilles in Week 1 seemingly sunk Super Bowl hopes had by the Jets and also served as a reminder that things can and often do change quickly across an NFL season. While the Vikings haven't yet earned a win, they will look to right the ship when they play at the 0-3 Carolina Panthers this coming Sunday.

Schefter acknowledged during the show segment that a potential trade involving Cousins simply doesn't make "sense to the Vikings and the Jets right now."

As for Gang Green, head coach Robert Saleh insisted Monday that Wilson remains his "unquestioned quarterback" heading into this Sunday night's game between the 1-2 Jets and 2-1 Kansas City Chiefs despite protests offered by former New York stars such as Boomer Esiason and Hall of Famer Joe Namath.
