Insider shares update on Stefon Diggs, Bills issues

NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated revealed more information about the latest situation involving the Buffalo Bills and wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

For a column published on Monday, Breer wrote that conversations between the Bills and Diggs "were necessary" after Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott initially said he was "very concerned" the 29-year-old didn't practice at the start of minicamp. McDermott then said he excused Diggs following discussions with the three-time Pro Bowler, and Ben Volin of the Boston Globe mentioned over the weekend that Diggs' "frustration is with his role in the offense and his voice in play-calling."

Diggs famously confronted star quarterback Josh Allen during Buffalo's 27-10 home playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in January. The receiver ended that game with four catches on 10 targets for 35 yards and zero touchdowns.

"My understanding is that, mostly, it was that he and the team needed to get on the same page on the direction of the offense," Breer wrote. "And I would say that, from my experience, Diggs is not just a really good player. Deep down, he’s a really good guy, too, which is reflected in how his teammates feel about him."

Allen seemingly accepted some blame for Diggs' apparent unhappiness while speaking with reporters last week and made it known he feels that "there’s things I could do better to help out with this process and try to get him back here and be the Buffalo Bill that he’s meant to be."

Meanwhile, Diggs raised eyebrows earlier in the offseason when he expressed bewilderment over Buffalo failing to make a Super Bowl appearance across the past three seasons.

"I also think that some of this probably stems from his desire to win at the highest level, and a belief that the best way for the Bills to do that is through fully leveraging his talents," Breer added.

Breer also noted that he thinks Diggs will "be fine this year" and that things between the two parties "are OK" heading into the summer. If, however, the Bills are again inactive on Super Bowl Sunday, Diggs theoretically could do more than create a couple of behind-the-scenes headaches for Buffalo ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
