Insider sheds light on Jared Goff’s long-term future as Lions QB

When the Los Angeles Rams sent quarterback Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions during the 2021 offseason, he was considered by many as nothing more than a throw-in bridge starter until the Lions drafted their next franchise QB with one of the two first-round picks L.A. sent them for QB Matthew Stafford.

But three years later, Goff, who has one more year left on the four-year, $134M contract he signed with the Rams in 2019, has resurrected his career in Detroit and he’s likely in line for a big-money extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“They had hopes that he would be the franchise guy that he has now become,” Rapoport stated. “His production this year actually rivals his production he had during his best year with the Rams. He’s heading into a contract year next year and he’s had some brief extension talks before the season, Expect those to ramp up after the season with Goff once again proving his worth as a franchise quarterback in the NFL.”

Goff’s next contract will likely fall somewhere between the four-year, $160M deals ($40M per season) that Stafford and Daniel Jones signed with the Rams and New York Giants, respectively, and the five-year, $230.5M extension the Arizona Cardinals gave Kyler Murray.

Spotrac projected Goff to sign a four-year, $210M extension back in November.

The 29-year-old Goff was second in the NFL this season in passing yards (4,575), and he ranked third in touchdowns (30), fifth in completion percentage (67.3) and seventh in passer rating (97.9), and he was tied for fourth in yards per attempt (7.6).

Over the last two seasons, Patrick Mahomes is the only QB with more passing yards (9,433) than Goff’s 9,013, and Mahomes (68) and Josh Allen (64) are the only two passers with more touchdowns than Goff’s 59.

His 19 interceptions are also tied for the second-fewest of any QB to play in 30 or more games over that span.
