Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Is now the time for the Bills to shake up their WR room?

Many would agree that finding a workhorse running back is a top priority for the Buffalo Bills this offseason.

However, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic made a case that Buffalo should also focus on revamping its wide receiver group to take pressure off quarterback Josh Allen and help reduce the number of double teams for leading receiver Stefon Diggs.

“The position desperately needs a refresh with substantial resources added in the short and long term,” Buscaglia said. “…(Gabe) Davis, (Isaiah) McKenzie, (Khalil) Shakir and (Cole) Beasley were not getting the job done to help Allen, which is why they should look to enhance the position in a big way.”

Buscaglia’s premise does have its merit.

Aside from Diggs and his 108 catches and 1,429 yards, only Davis had more than 42 receptions and 425 yards. In fact, McKenzie, Shakir, Beasley, Jake Kumerow and Jamison Crowder combined for just 64 receptions, 726 yards and five touchdowns.

And of the five, only Davis, McKenzie and Shakir are under contract for 2023.

Buffalo has the 28th overall pick in the first round and the 59th overall pick in the second round. First-round options could include USC’s Jordan Addison, Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt or Boston College’s Zay Flowers.

Second-round receivers who could still be around include North Carolina’s Josh Downs, SMU’s Rashee Rice, Penn State’s Parker Washington and Tennessee’s Cedric Tillman.

“Getting a receiver near the top of this class could help give a boost the Bills have yet to see from a young receiver,” Buscaglia added. “First and second-round receivers are beginning to make a legitimate impact as a rookie far more often than they used to. …Whether it’s a boundary receiver, a slot receiver or a boundary receiver who can play the slot, it’s time for the Bills to invest in a receiver with an early pick.”
