What a difference a year makes for Isaiah Wright. Last year, he made the Washington Football Team’s 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie. However, this year he didn’t make the final cuts. Wright was released Monday ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s cut down deadline, per ESPN’s John Keim.

Second-year quarterback Steven Montez, who also went undrafted in 2020, headlines the initial roster cuts with Wright.

Last season, Wright made the roster in large due to his special teams contribution. He then worked his way into Washington’s offense. Wright appeared in 14 games, starting six. He finished his first NFL campaign with 27 catches and 197 yards.

But this offseason head coach Ron Rivera sought to upgrade the wide receiver position for the Washington Football Team. The additions of Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries in free agency served as the catalyst of the change in direction at wideout, as the team built a supporting cast alongside star receiver Terry McLaurin.

Washington also added Dyami Brown and Dax Milne in this past spring’s draft. The shuffle in focus left a number of incumbent wide receivers on the brink. Ultimately, Isaiah Wright suffered similar fates as Kelvin Harmon and Steven Sims Jr., whom were released earlier this month.

Washington reportedly made a total of 10 cuts, leaving the team at 70 players. They’ll need to get down to 53 by 4 PM Tuesday.

There were no surprises with the first set of cuts revealed. It shows how much the overall roster has been upgraded this offseason. And wide receiver highlights those changes. Washington now has speed across the board. More importantly Washington believes they have a group of receivers who can get separation and opened.
