It's now or never for Eagles defense

After leading the NFL with 70 sacks in 2022, the Eagles have just 39 this year. If their defense can’t get to the Giants’ Tommy DeVito on Monday, they can “fuhgeddaboudit” when it comes to winning the NFC East.

Simply put, New York may have the worst offensive line in football. While Washington quarterback Sam Howell has been sacked a league-high 59 times, few realize DeVito has been dropped at a more staggering rate.

In seven games, New York’s backup QB has already been sacked 35 times. At his current pace, DeVito will take 50 sacks this year. Had he played in every game, he would have been sacked 85 times, six more than Houston’s David Carr took in 2002 to set the NFL record.

In other words, there’s really no excuse for the Eagles to come up small against a Giants offensive line with no idea of how to protect their quarterback. Among the four starters on the defensive line, Josh Sweat is the only player not taken with a high first-round pick (130th overall).

Ironically, Sweat is having a better year than all of his linemates. Only linebacker Haason Reddick has more sacks (11) than Sweat (6.5) and his two forced fumbles are tied for the team lead with defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

Carter and fellow tackle Jordan Davis had the only two sacks against Seattle in the team’s 20-17 loss on “Monday Night Football.” Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints had seven sacks against the Giants in Week 15.

Philadelphia relieved defensive coordinator Sean Desai of play-calling duties in favor of Matt Patricia last week but Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock enjoyed a clean pocket for most of the game.

The Eagles won’t enjoy a home-field advantage if DeVito plays well against them. Philly fans love defense almost as much as they like to “boo.” With their team riding a three-game losing streak, Lincoln Financial Field won’t be pleasant for either team unless DeVito goes down.
