The Jacksonville Jaguars have been very busy this offseason when it comes to player personnel. They were active in free agency, with one of their goals being to upgrade the supporting cast around franchise quarterback, Trevor Lawrence.

The team lost leading receiver Calvin Ridley in free agency to the Tennessee Titans, but added plenty of depth to replace him. Their biggest splash was former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis in free agency.

The Jaguars also signed Devin Duvernay, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens. Tight end Josiah Deguara was signed away from the Green Bay Packers to add some depth and blocking behind Evan Engram as well.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, Jacksonville continued making upgrades to their weaponry on offense. With their first-round pick, No. 23 overall, the Jaguars selected LSU star wide receiver Brain Thomas Jr.

With that selection, it meant another move had to be made with their roster. That decision came down on Tuesday, as the Jaguars are moving on from veteran Zay Jones. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Jones and kicker Joey Slye were released on Tuesday morning.

Jones had been with the Jaguars for two seasons, signing a deal as a free agent in 2022. He put up career-high numbers in his first season with the team, but his 2024 campaign was derailed by a nagging knee injury which cost him eight games.

The move will save Jacksonville $4.49 million against the salary cap, which gives them a little more wiggle room to sign their draft class and any veterans who make shake free. He should receive a good amount of interest on the open market.

Slye was signed to a one-year, $1.29 million deal in March with $25,000 guaranteed. But, the team felt he was expendable after using a sixth-round pick on kicker Cam Little out of Arkansas. Veteran kicker Riley Patterson remains on the roster, as there was no need to carry three kickers into the offseason workouts.
