It seems Kyle Sloter didn’t do enough to impress at the Hall of Fame Game. The sixth year veteran was released by the Jaguars on Tuesday after completing 13 of 25 passes, for 127 yards and one touchdown. Sloter was signed by Jacksonville on the back of an impressive season in the USFL with the New Orleans Breakers.
He is replaced on the roster by a familiar face. EJ Perry, who the Jags signed shortly after the NFL Draft, is back on the team. He agreed to a one year deal to return to Duval County, as per Adam Schefter:
Jacksonville previously released Perry with a ‘non-football injury’ designation back on July 24th. Just sixteen days later, he’s back on the team. Perry looks set to earn his first NFL snaps in the upcoming preseason game against the Cleveland Browns this coming Friday. With CJ Beathard still being nursed back from injury, Perry and Jake Luton will likely feature heavily, despite the potential of Trevor Lawrence getting his first action this year.
QB3 Battle
With Beathard expected to be the official backup, the final QB spot on the roster is up for grabs. Luton looks to have the inside track on the job after starting the Hall of Fame Game, going 10/17 for 94 yards. But it will be interesting to see what Perry has to offer. He’s obviously a player The Jaguars obviously have some admiration for. Head coach Doug Pederson explained the decision to release Perry, only to bring him back:
“With EJ, and his injury this summer, we had to make a decision because we needed another arm in there to keep throwing in practice, in the preseason games. This is a great opportunity for him to really embrace this chance, embrace this opportunity, get some time in maybe these first couple of games, and get some meaningful reps and tape out there. Not only for us, but also potentially for other teams too.”
EJ Perry started his collegiate career at Boston College, before transferring to Brown to play for his uncle, James Perry. Perry started 20 games for the Bears, throwing for 5,972 yards and 45 touchdowns. He also added another 1,129 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. He impressed people at the NFL Combine with his big arm and natural athleticism. Despite going undrafted, Perry was highly sought after as a UDFA. After initially opting for the Eagles, he reconsidered once Philly signed fellow rookie QB Carson Strong.
