Jaguars GM: Leonard Fournette is in plans moving forward

Although the Jacksonville Jaguars declined to pick up Leonard Fournette's fifth-year option, the team appears to be ready to move forward with him in 2020.

The Jaguars attempted to trade Fournette for about a month, and they didn't receive any legitimate trade offers. With that being said, general manager Dave Caldwell said the Jaguars will go into the 2020 season with the 25-year-old running back on the team, essentially shutting the door on trade discussions, for now.

"There were just some minor discussions with that but nothing substantial throughout the draft or prior to the draft," Caldwell said on the PFT PM podcast, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "I think the mindset is that we're going to go forward with Leonard on the team. I had a good talk with him on Friday. I know Coach [Doug] Marrone has had some discussion with him.

"He seems to be in great shape and mental frame of mind, and we feel that he'll have a great season this year."

Fournette's 2019 campaign was his best since being drafted by Jacksonville fourth overall in 2017. He rushed for 1,152 yards and three touchdowns while adding 552 yards receiving. Although he only had three touchdowns last season, it seems like he'll be even more relied upon in 2020.

Moving forward with Fournette on the roster probably is the most logical answer for the Jaguars ... they don't have many other options at the position right now. However, they may not be very good as a team in 2020. They've traded many of their best players and will be relying on Gardner Minshew to carry the load. We'll see, though.
