Jaguars haven't decided how much Trevor Lawrence will play in preseason

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie quarterback and first-overall draft selection Trevor Lawrence underwent offseason surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and also dealt with a lingering hamstring issue this spring but has been working in the early days of training camp as the Jaguars prepare to open the preseason against the Cleveland Browns on Aug. 14.

How much Lawrence will play in that game remains unknown.

According to the NFL's website, Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer told reporters Wednesday he intends to pick the brains of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and passing game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer before declaring how much Lawrence will see and face live defenses during August exhibition contests.

"There's a reason why I hired Bevell and Schottenheimer; they're veteran quarterback coaches at this level," Meyer explained. "Also veteran quarterback coaches with [experience coaching] young players [at the position]. So, we have not had that dialogue yet. It's all about, today was about red zone. That will come at the appropriate time, but I'm gonna lean heavily on those guys."

As John Oehser noted for the Jaguars' website, Lawrence has been a mixed bag in camp, which is to be expected of any first-year signal-caller learning life in the league as a starter. While coaching staffs use preseason games to pinpoint and eliminate errors made by young quarterbacks, risking Lawrence's health by giving him too many snaps in meaningless matchups is likely not a risk worth the reward considering the massive investment Jacksonville made to land his services.
