Jaguars HC believes adding five-time Pro Bowler is unrealistic

Although wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins could be an excellent option for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars have little interest in adding the five-time Pro Bowler.

"At this time, it's not a reality to bring someone else in," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said in a Monday news conference.

At this point, Hopkins, a free agent, is more of a luxury than a necessity. Jacksonville finished 10th in passing yards last season. Christian Kirk, 26, became a bonafide No. 1 WR, finishing with a career-high 1,108 receiving yards in 17 games. Also, Pederson recently said he's been "impressed" with Calvin Ridley.

Hopkins has high contract demands, too. Tim Graham of The Athletic reported Hopkins wants a similar deal to the one Odell Beckham Jr. signed with Baltimore (a one-year, $15M deal with $13.85M guaranteed).

Per Spotrac, the Jaguars hold $10.7M in cap space. While signing Hopkins is a stretch, they can make it work. Yet they might want to save room for Lawrence, who's due for a fifth-year option next season.

So signing a 30-year-old wideout doesn't make sense, especially one who might be starting to exit his prime. One league executive told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated that Hopkins "can't run anymore" and doesn't have much left.

Hopkins' availability is starting to become a concern. During his first eight seasons, he only missed two games. He's missed 15 games (six due to a performance-enhancing drug suspension) over the past two seasons.

Since the Jaguars are stable at WR, and there are some questions about Hopkins, they shouldn't feel like they're missing out.
