Jaguars sign coach's son, former USFL TE

Josh Pederson's next head coach will be someone that knows him pretty well.

The 25-year-old played in all 10 games of the 2023 United States Football League (USFL) season with the Houston Gamblers, recording 25 catches. Pederson racked up 325 receiving yards, which ranked third among tight ends.

After playing at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, he went undrafted in 2021, but spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. Pederson didn't play in any games and has yet to appear in an NFL contest.

The former Warhawk said Monday that he was able to break the exciting news to his mother, Jeannie, and one of his brothers.

The elder Pederson is entering his second season as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His son joins one of the more exciting, young offenses in the NFL, which includes Pro Bowl quarterback Trevor Lawrence, dynamic running back Travis Etienne and wide receivers Christian Kirk and Calvin Ridley, among others.

If Pederson were to make the Jaguars active roster, he may not see many snaps (barring injury), at least at the start of the year. Jacksonville's starting tight end is Evan Engram, who had a career year in 2022, while the projected backup is rookie Brenton Strange, who the Jaguars used a second-round pick on in the spring.

Doug and Jeannie have three sons -- Drew, Joel and Josh.

For however long the new tight end lasts in Jacksonville, it'll certainly be one of the more intriguing summer storylines across Jags nation.
