The Jacksonville Jaguars took the short walk from the Miller Electric Center to EverBank Stadium on Saturday, holding practice No. 9 of training camp inside the stadium in front of their fans.
What all did we see during Saturday's practice? We break it down below.
Tyson Campbell leaves practice
There was a scary moment at practice on Saturday, with Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell going down for several minutes after a collision with wide receiver Christian Kirk. Ridley eventually got up and then went to a bench with a trainer and even spoke with general manager Trent Baalke in the following moments before walking back to the locker room with a trainer under his own power.
Campbell came back to the practice field with the trainer during the final period of the day, with the Jaguars saying after practice that Campbell sustained a concussion and would now be in concussion protocol. Campbell seemed to be in good sports at the end of practice as he spoke with teammates and waved to fans in the crowd, but it can probably be expected for Campbell to not play vs. the Dallas Cowboys next Saturday.
Tyler Shatley goes through individual drills after AFIB Situation
Another scary situation at camp occurred Wednesday, with offensive lineman Tyler Shatley experiencing an incident of atrial fibrillation, according to head coach Doug Pederson. According to Johns Hopkins' website, atrial fibrillation is a "type of arrhythmia, or abnormal heartbeat. Afib is caused by extremely fast and irregular beats from the upper chambers of the heart (usually more than 400 beats per minute)." Shatley did not practice on Thursday, but did dress out in full uniform and take part in some individual drills during Saturday's practice.
“We got him right away, got him treated,” Pederson said. “He’s fine. He’s OK. He’s with the team. Everything’s calmed down. He’ll be out there today. He’ll be in uniform, but until he’s cleared, he’ll just work on the side and all that.”
Shatley naturally didn't take part in any 11-on-11 drills and seemed to have a lighter day than the rest of the linemen. Shatley is the team's longest-tenured player and started 12 games at left guard in 2022 during their late-season playoff run.
Calvin Ridley has a good showing
Before Campbell's concussion, the Jaguars' starting secondary was struggling to contain wide receiver Calvin Ridley. The Jaguars' alpha-male receiver has been one of the standout performers of the entire roster during the first two weeks of camp, but it was just a few days ago that Campbell and the Jaguars' secondary was able to contribute to Ridley's worst practice as a Jaguar.
Ridley bounced back in a big way on Saturday, though, giving Campbell and Darious Williams fits during one-on-ones and the early portion of team drills. Ridley ran crisp routes and was difficult for either corner to defend in space, with Ridley making two impressive catches against Campbell and arguably the catch of the day on a touchdown vs. Williams.
Devin Lloyd takes part in rush drill for the first time
Devin Lloyd is a second-year veteran but he doesn't have a ton of training camp practices under his belt. Even then, Lloyd has never once in two years taken part in one-on-one pass-rush drills against the offensive line. That changed on Saturday, though, as Lloyd got a late rep in against reserve offensive tackle Coy Cronk. Cronk held him in check, but it was a potential shift for the Jaguars.
To say the Jaguars' edge rush group has been a question mark in camp so far would be an understatement. Josh Allen is getting good pressure and Travon Walker has made his fair share of plays, but K'Lavon Chaisson, Yasir Abdullah, Jordan Smith and the rest of the depth chart have failed to make much of an impact. If that trend continues, maybe Lloyd sees more and more snaps on the edge.
Play of the Day
The best play of the day was probably Calvin Ridley's touchdown catch vs. Darious Williams. It was a beautiful fade route that saw Ridley create separation before making a catch in the corner of the end zone with just barely two feet in bounds.
Other notes
- The Jaguars didn't have kicker Brandon McManus on hand on Saturday, with the starting kicker in Canton to celebrate former teammate and new Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware.
- Tyler Lacy and De'Shaan Dixon both flashed as interior rushers during one-on-ones, giving Michael Brewer, Cooper Hodges and Cole Lan Vanen Fits. Lacy showed nice quickness for an interior defender while Dixon is simply too athletic for most guards to block when he gets bumped inside.
- Anton Harrison had some nice reps in one-on-ones, too. He had a welcome to the NFL moment on his first rep vs. K'Lavon Chaisson but then held his own, including a good rep vs. Josh Allen near the end of the drill.
- Linebacker Ventrell Miller didn't take part in most team drills, instead running sprints with a trainer in the end-zone.
- Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson pointed out Kevin Austin Jr. as a standout on the wide receiver depth chart. He also singled out Elijah Cooks, Jacob Harris, and Tim Jones.
- It was a tough practice for Josh Pederson. He dropped three passes in team drills, including a potential touchdown at the end of practice.
- Trevor Lawrence was on fire outside of a miss to a wide-open Jamal Agnew during 7-on-7 drills. He had several impressive touchdown throws into tight windows and had one of his most consistent days in terms of accuracy.
