Jaguars waive RB Ryquell Armstead after lost season due to COVID-19

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead failed to record a single carry during the 2020 NFL season and spent two stints on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Per Michael DiRocco of ESPN, the Jaguars waived the 2019 fifth-round draft selection.

Armstead rushed for 108 yards on 35 carries and added 14 receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie but unfortunately dealt with multiple setbacks amid the coronavirus pandemic. Dan Rorabaugh of the Florida Times-Union noted in October that the 24-year-old dealt with "significant respiratory issues" and was hospitalized twice while battling problems linked with a COVID-19 infection.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, had rookie undrafted free agent James Robinson lead the team in rushing in his debut campaign with 1,070 yards and seven scores on the ground. Somewhat controversially, Jacksonville spent a first-round draft pick on Clemson Tigers ball-carrier Travis Etienne on April 29. As Josh Alper wrote for Pro Football Talk, though, Etienne worked as a wide receiver during this weekend's rookie minicamp sessions.

The hope, moving forward, is that Armstead will fully recover from a difficult year and ultimately return to the field with a different organization.
