Jahmyr Gibbs reminds Lions GM of two versatile, star RBs

Lions general manager Brad Holmes doubled down on praise for Jahmyr Gibbs, comparing him to versatile, star running backs.

"When I first got with the Rams in 2003, Marshall Faulk was still there, and I was a huge Marshall Faulk guy," Holmes recently said on "The Season with Peter Schrager." "And from a scouting standpoint, when Christian McCaffrey came out, he was the last guy that I was like, 'Holy cow, this guy runs routes like a slot receiver, but also runs it.' So, you start getting reminders of those players. I'm not sitting here saying Jahmyr Gibbs is those players, but [he's] a special weapon like that."

Faulk—a Pro Football Hall of Famer—is fifth all-time in yards from scrimmage (19,154) and seventh in TDs (136). Meanwhile, McCaffrey—a two-time Pro Bowler— has the fourth-most yards (8,482) and is tied for eighth in TDs (60) since 2017.

If Gibbs' career follows a similar trajectory, he will become one of the top offensive playmakers in the NFL.

Gibbs possesses qualities similar to Faulk and McCaffrey, specifically his receiving ability. "He runs routes like a [wide] receiver," Holmes said.

During his final season at Alabama, Gibbs caught 44 receptions for 444 yards and scored 10 TDs in 12 games. He also rushed for 926 yards on 151 carries. The Lions should maximize both skills because it makes their offense more explosive and unpredictable, which could help them win their first division title since 1993.

Detroit selecting Gibbs with the 12th overall pick in the draft was controversial since picking RBs early carries risk. Nonetheless, Holmes continues to hype the rookie since he believes he is a game-changer for the franchise.
