The Falcons feature one of the better offensive lines in football, but the only bonafide star among the group is Chris Lindstrom. However, one of the most underrated linemen across the entire league is Jake Matthews.

The stalwart left tackle has been an absolute iron man for the Falcons; he hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season in 2014, and he played in 15 games that year. He’s started every single game since joining the team except for one… 137 games out of a possible 138. That’s unbelievable for a lineman in today’s NFL.

One of the best pass protectors in the league, Matthews is severely underrated among the top tackles in football. On the flip side, his run blocking always left a bit to be desired until recently. Under Dwayne Ledford and Arthur Smith, Matthews, along with the entire offensive line, has dramatically improved in that department.

In Jeremy Fowler’s ESPN rankings that polls execs, coaches, and scouts, Matthews received votes as one of the top tackles in the league. Below is the full list, along with honorable mentions and those who received votes.

  1.  Trent Williams
  2. Laremy Tunsil
  3. Tristan Wirfs
  4. Lane Johnson
  5. Jordan Mailata
  6. Penei Sewell
  7. Andrew Thomas
  8. Rashawn Slater
  9. Christian Darrisaw
  10. Kolton Miller

Honorable mentions: Ryan Ramczyk, Terron Armstead, David Bakhtiari, Brian O’Neill, Tyron Smith

Also receiving votes: Jawaan Taylor, Orlando Brown Jr., Jake Matthews, Dion Dawkins, Taylor Decker, Taylor Moton

Falcons fans shouldn’t really have a gripe with this list. Jake Matthews has never been elite but always rock solid. Now, he’s improving his run blocking, and it’s increased his value to the team.

In March of 2022, the team and Matthews agreed to a three-year extension worth $55.5 million that keeps him in Atlanta until 2026, which is his age-34 season. Given his ability to stay healthy, there’s no reason to think he can’t stay with the Falcons for the entirety of the deal.
