Jameis Winston explains decision to sign with Saints

When Jameis Winston was displaced by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after Tom Brady signed with the team, his future in the NFL was highly uncertain.

However, he has since signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, and he's hoping Sean Payton and his staff can revive his career like they did for Teddy Bridgewater before him.

It doesn't sound like it was a difficult decision for Winston to sign with the Saints, but did he have many other options anyway? Regardless, he sounds pretty excited for his new venture.

"Being a part of the New Orleans Saints -- being a part with Drew Brees, Taysom Hill, Sean Payton, coach Joe Lombardi, coach Pete Carmichael Jr. -- when you think about that room, that's like a Harvard education in quarterback school," Winston said Tuesday during an appearance on "Chalk Talk" with Charlie Ward on Instagram Live, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett. "So I wanted to put my ego aside -- put the money to the side -- to think about my family, think about my career.

"And there was no better position than to be in the same room with someone that I've really looked up to, that I've admired since I've been playing this game, in Drew Brees."

Winston may be right about New Orleans' ability to develop quarterbacks. Bridgewater went 5-0 last season with the Saints, throwing for 1,384 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes.

As for Winston, he had a rather odd campaign with the Bucs last season. While he did throw for 5,109 yards and 30 touchdowns, he also threw 30 interceptions.

He's never really been that consistent of a quarterback, but maybe he'll make the most of his opportunity in New Orleans.
