Jerry Jones bluntly addresses how Trey Lance can help Cowboys this season

If nothing else, it's hard to argue that Jerry Jones isn't honest. Since striking the trade to acquire quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys owner has been an open book about the decision to make the deal.

This includes being brutally honest about the 2023 outlook of the move, which, although it was fairly obvious to any and all NFL fans, was still refreshing.

As The Athletic's Jon Machota revealed, Jones gave a blunt but candid answer when asked about how Lance can help the Cowboys this season.

“Candidly, I don’t want to plan on, count on, or wish for help from him this year.” Jones said, per Machota.

With Dak Prescott set for his first year in head coach Mike McCarthy's offense following the departure of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, there's plenty of excitement surrounding the potential upside for this unit in 2023.

But going even beyond that, backup quarterback Cooper Rush proved to be more than capable of holding down the fort in Prescott's absence last season.

Over the span of five starts in 2022, Rush led the team to a 4-1 mark while throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions — with all three picks coming in the lone loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

If all goes to plan, Lance will spend the entirety of the 2023 NFL season watching from the sidelines and learning from Prescott and even Rush.

As for the future? That remains the big question, but his future with the Cowboys is unlikely to begin anytime soon, barring something drastic happening.
