Jerry Jones: Cowboys 'respect' Dontari Poe kneeling during national anthem

Dontari Poe was the only member of the Dallas Cowboys to kneel during the national anthem in Week 1 but his decision didn't get any push back from owner Jerry Jones, who said the team respects Poe's decision to protest.

"I thought our players showed respect to Poe's decision," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. "They did show a sensitivity to our fans as a team but also asked in a very sensitivity to have the help we hope comes. Our team was very real and genuine in the way we approached it."

Poe informed teammates and coaches of his decision to kneel before the game and he told the team's website that he felt that kneeling was his way of "bringing more awareness to what's going on in this world."

"This is letting people know and this is my way of fighting it," Poe said of his choice to kneel. "It's the beginning of it. We might not see change in my lifetime. I do want to start it by doing the simple things such as kneeling to let people know that I feel this way."

Jones was once openly against players kneeling but in light of the nationwide protests in response to the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. It appears Jones has changed his perspective.

“We all do understand where I stand relative to the national anthem and the flag," Jones said before the season. “On the other hand, I really do recognize the time we’re in."
