The Dallas Cowboys enter Week 6 on a low note and things could get worse if the team fails to show up against the L.A. Chargers on Monday night. Joining 105.3 The Fan on Friday, team owner Jerry Jones revealed how much he’s “dreading” facing the Chargers with his former coordinator Kellen Moore calling the L.A. offense.
Parting ways with Moore was one of several major offseason decisions and if the former Cowboys quarterback leads the Chargers to victory, fans certainly won’t be shy about calling out the general manager and head coach Mike McCarthy for the choice to send him packing.
“I have dreaded seeing Kellen on this occasion,” Jones said, via the Athletics‘ Jon Machota. “Kellen is one of my favorites as far as individuals. He’s a talented coach, make no mistake about it. … He’s become an outstanding coach.”
Before Moore coordinated the Dallas Cowboys offense, he was a quarterback for the team, sitting behind Dak Prescott. Jones, who is very familiar with the Chargers O.C.’s former playing style, compared him to 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who put up 42 points on Dallas in Week 5.
“When I see Purdy perform the way he does, I immediately go in my mind to Kellen and I think of how outstanding a quarterback Kellen was,” Jones said, via Jori Epstein. “You might say well does he have the arm talent or does he have the size or does he have the speed? Yet Kellen won [50 of 53] college games. Purdy didn’t quite have that kind of number but boy, do they know how to play football. And they know how to execute.”
Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy keeps it all business regarding Kellen Moore
Asked whether there’s any personal motivation going into Monday’s game, Mike McCarthy downplayed the battle of the minds against Kellen Moore. Considering McCarthy doesn’t call the Cowboys defense, it’s up to Dan Quinn to “put it on” the former Dallas coach.
“No, not really,” McCarthy said, via Machota. “There’s really no bells and whistles for this one. This is Game 6. My focus has always been, and it’s really the way I view schedules, I think a lot of NFL scheduling is it’s not as much who you play it’s when you play them… He obviously has an excellent opportunity that he’s doing a very nice job with.”
The Chargers are 2-2 so far this season and coming off of a bye week. The offense, quarterbacked by Justin Herbert, has put up at least 24 points or more in each of its four contests.
