In the worst kept secret since Trevor Lawrence went first overall in the draft, the New York Jets have unveiled their “new” uniforms.
The new uniforms are a throwback to the “Sack Exchange” era uniform and logo but with a modern twist borrowed from the last iteration of Jets uniforms. The helmets use a metallic green along with the logo used in the late 80’s and 90’s.
There is also the “Stealth Black” version similar to the version the Jets used for their Black Friday game last season which includes a black jersey and black pants which is now called “Legacy Black”. The Legacy Black Helmets include the old logo in green but trimmed in white on a matte black helmet shell. The block J-E-T-S insignia is topped with a plane reminiscent of the Boeing logo.
Woody Johnson released a statement saying, "We work for the fans. They have consistently asked for us to return to our roots and we heard them. The new uniforms are explicitly designed to look and feel like the New York Jets while refreshing the club's iconic logo – viewed by fans as our most identifiable mark."
The organization also announced a "full suite of secondary logos has been developed to reinforce and expand the Jets brand identity. These logos incorporate key characteristics of the primary mark, including font, color and in some instances the distinctive shape of the Jet."
The secondary logo, which is a green “NY” with a old Concorde plane looking logo above it is also a fresh take on the classic logo.
This is the best iteration of Jets uniforms I have seen in my lifetime. The uniform is simple and a nod to the past, but not so basic as to as be boring. The metallic green helmet with the J-E-T-S insignia is one of the coolest in the league. I am excited to see what they come up with for the newly allowed third helmet the NFL approved. My guess is it will be a throwback to the Nameth-era which will be great for a game or two.
The Jets will certainly look good this season, at least when they walk on the field. Now they just have to work out the “look good, play good” part of it.
