Will the New York Jets plead or repeal the fifth? The decision could come to define their offseason.

A fateful spring awaits offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, who is due for his fifth-year option worth over $15.4 million. True to the Jets' wary nature, there's no clear cut answer to the question set to pave the path of Vera-Tucker's future, one Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team labels one of the NFL's "most difficult" contract options looming.

"Vera-Tucker has been excellent for the New York Jets whenever he’s healthy, playing every position on the offensive line except center. His issue has been staying healthy. He’s played in just 12 games over the last two seasons," Meirov writes. "He tore his triceps in 2022 and tore his Achilles this past season."

"Finding great offensive linemen is difficult, and I’d guess the Jets will likely take on the injury risk with Vera-Tucker."

Vera-Tucker is joined on the semi-dubious list by Justin Fields (Chicago), Najee Harris (Pittsburgh), Odafe Oweh (Baltimore), and Kyle Pitts (Atlanta).

A USC alum, Vera-Tucker holds an interesting place in Jets lore, as the pick used on his arrival was an indirect yield from the trade that sent franchise face Jamal Adams to Seattle. As Meirov mentioned, injuries have decimated Vera-Tucker's career since a brilliant rookie campaign.

An Achilles injury limited him to only five appearances this time around and his presence was sorely missed, especially after starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down. The Jets' running game took a noticeable step backward with Vera-Tucker sidelined, one of several ailments that ate away at the team's primary protection.
