Jets interested in hosting Black Friday game annually

It appears the Cincinnati Bengals aren't the only team interested in hosting the NFL's annual Black Friday game.

Per ESPN, the New York Jets have also made it known they wish to host the league's latest commodity on an annual basis. The NFL confirmed last week that the Jets will host the Miami Dolphins in the league's first-ever Black Friday game on Nov. 24, and it was subsequently reported that the Bengals wanted to make hosting the contest an annual tradition for Cincinnati.

"I hope I'm not speaking out of turn when I mentioned to people that the Bengals volunteered," NFL vice president of broadcast planning Mike North explained during an appearance on "The Adam Schefter Podcast."

North added other teams "raised their hands" to serve as home clubs for future Black Friday games.

"The Jets, once they found out they were the host team, then started to think about, 'Hey, is this something we could make a permanent fixture as part of the NFL schedule?'" North continued. "Maybe they didn't raise their hands in February, but now that they have been selected as the Black Friday host, I think they might be interested in it, too."

North and Amazon vice president of global sports video Marie Donoghue are among the noteworthy individuals who have said putting the first Black Friday game in the country's top retail market was desirable, largely because Amazon is offering this year's matchup on Prime Video for free.

The Philadelphia Eagles facing the New York Giants was also considered for Black Friday, as was a rivalry game such as one involving the Bengals hosting a fellow AFC North club.

North acknowledged that league owners and commissioner Roger Goodell will ultimately decide if any one team will permanently host the Black Friday game similar to how the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys always play at home on Thanksgiving Day.

"I don't think we were looking for this season to commit to a permanent home for Black Friday," North remarked. "Let's play one first and let's see what we learn and let's see what makes sense and let's see if it works for our fans, I don't think we were looking on day one to deploy this with a permanent home."
