Jets LB Jarrad Davis out two months with left ankle injury

The New York Jets lost defensive end Carl Lawson and safety Zane Lewis to season-ending injuries during a joint practice with the Green Bay Packers on Thursday and continued to deliver bad news at the start of the week.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, Jets coach Robert Saleh told reporters Monday that linebacker Jarrad Davis is expected to be sidelined two months with a left ankle injury said not to be a high ankle sprain. Saleh added Davis could return "around the bye week," which suggests the 26-year-old will miss at least the first five games of the season.

Davis was carted to the locker room because of the setback during Saturday's preseason win at Green Bay. He entered the NFL when the Detroit Lions selected him in the first round of the 2017 draft and spent his first four campaigns with that club before he joined the Jets via a one-year contract worth $5.5 million in March.

While rookie Jamien Sherwood is expected to immediately replace Davis in the lineup, the Jets are also working out free-agent linebackers. It's possible Gang Green could also explore trade options before the regular-season opener at the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 12.

The Jets finish the preseason with a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles Friday.
