Jets' Marcus Maye not expected to sign extension before deadline

The New York Jets placed the franchise tag on starting safety Marcus Maye in March but aren't any closer to signing him to an extension or a new contract.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t Kevin Patra) reported Tuesday that the Jets haven't responded to Maye's latest offer, which has now been taken off the table. Tagged players have until Thursday at 4 p.m. ET to sign a deal, and the 28-year-old is set to earn $10.61 million for the upcoming season via the one-year tender.

Maye tallied 88 total tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 11 pass breakups during the 2020 campaign, the best, to date, of his NFL career. However, the Jets hit the figurative reset button after 2020 and have a new head coach in Robert Saleh and a new starting quarterback in rookie Zach Wilson. Thus, it's understandable they'd have Maye complete at least one contract year knowing they could tag him a second time next March.

According to Rapoport, the Jets recently offered Maye a contract that included an average per year of 20% below the $10.61 million he would earn playing under the tag. Maye's camp rejected the offer because he previously learned he would've received better deals that included more guaranteed money had he hit free agency.
