Jets' Mike White talked to 'almost 10 doctors' to try to play vs. Lions

Quarterback Mike White did just about everything he could to get cleared to start for the 7-6 New York Jets against the 6-7 Detroit Lions this Sunday.

"I think I’ve tried talking to almost 10 doctors just to find somebody to clear me, and they just won't," White explained about being medically benched, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I completely understand why, but I’m always gonna try to fight like hell to be on the field with my guys. It's frustrating, but it's part of football. Part of life that you have to deal with."

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, White added that he is dealing with fractures to his ribs coming off last Sunday's 20-12 loss at the Buffalo Bills. The 27-year-old's status for the upcoming "Thursday Night Football" matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-8) is unknown, but logic suggests he won't be cleared after just three midweek days off.

Second-year pro Zach Wilson was made an inactive third-string option for the past three games as White started. Head coach Robert Saleh confirmed on Wednesday Wilson would be White's primary backup this week, but the 23-year-old is now getting the nod against the Lions in what may be a must-win game for both clubs.

"I think Zach is good. I think he’s in a good mental space, and he had a good week at practice," White said about the second pick of the 2021 NFL Draft who will again attempt to prove he can be the Jets' long-term answer at quarterback. "I think he’s ready to go. I’m excited to watch him. He’s in a good mental spot, and I think it’ll be a fun one."

ESPN stats show Wilson ranks last among eligible quarterbacks with a 55.6% completion percentage on the campaign. Across seven games before his benching, he matched four touchdown passes with five interceptions.

The Jets share the same record with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers but trail both those teams in the battle for a single playoff spot because of tiebreakers.
