The New York Jets are close to landing one of the top free agents left on the market, reportedly working toward a multi-year deal with offensive tackle Morgan Moses.

Moses, who started at right tackle for the Washington Football Team since 2014, was released in May. He received immediate interest but was looking for the right opportunity and contract.

After talking to multiple teams, the 30-year-old has seemingly found a home. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday that the Jets are considered the favorites to sign the 6-foot-6 tackle.

It’s been a busy offseason for New York. The franchise traded Sam Darnold and drafted Zach Wilson as its new star quarterback. Along with the hiring of head coach Robert Saleh, the Jets signed wide receivers Corey Davis and Keelan Cole, edge rusher Carl Lawson, linebacker Jarrad Davis, offensive guard Dan Feeney, safety Lamarcus Joyner and running back Tevin Coleman.

The Jets have more than $26 million in cap space, per OverTheCap, more than enough to land the best offensive lineman left on the market. While a contract is still being negotiated, a multi-year deal signals the club’s confidence in Moses and the impact he can have on this team.

Moses would replace right tackle George Fant, who New York signed to a three-year, $27.3 million contract last offseason.

Wilson thrived at BYU last season in part because he played behind one of the best offensive lines in the country. Adjusting to the pressure he will face in the NFL will be a major challenge, which is exactly why the Jets are placing such an emphasis on upgrading over Fant.

Moses is significantly better as a run blocker than Fant, which is crucial for New York. Mike LaFleur will emphasize the running game in his scheme, and an upgrade at right tackle would make things a lot easier. If the Jets can maintain a quality rushing attack, it opens up play-action more for Wilson and limits the amount of pressure he’ll face.
